A Coat of Arms, or family crest, is a way of identifying one's allegiance and/or class status. Different colors, shapes, and animals have symbolic meanings that were recognizable in the Middle Ages when one's coat of arms was proudly displayed. A coat of arms was typically in the form of a shield.
